Tenganan Village: Oldest Traditional Balinese Village

1. Tenganan Village

Tenganan Village is one of the famous historical sites and is visited by many foreign and domestic tourists. This village is located in Bali Regency, Karangasem which has a variety of unique historical sites that have existed before the existence of ancient Bali, therefore the people of Tenganan village believe that they are the original Balinese, because there is a number of strong evidence that can prove that they have lived before the ancient Balinese royal civilization took place. The origin of Tenganan Village is from the coast but due to attacks from fish the village community moved towards the middle, so the village was called Tenganan Village. In addition, another uniqueness of Tenganan Village is that it is one of the Balinese villages without a caste, Caste was brought by the Javanese Hindu Kingdom in other words, from the Majapahit Kingdom. The daily activities of Tenganan Pegurinsingan residents are engaged in agriculture or even you can pursue a handicraft business. Tenganan Village is still a very conservative village Protect their ancestral heritage. The inherent difference of Tenganan Village is from its calendar which is different from the Balinese calendar in general.

2. Location of Tenganan Village

Tenganan Village is located in Manggis District, Karangasem Regency, Bali Province with an area of 917.218 ha. Tenganan village or known as Tenganan Pegrin Singan From a series of traditional Balinese Aga villages. The climate of Tenganan village is tropical and has an average rainfall of 1500 2000 mm/year The temperature is in the range of 28-30C.

3. About the Uniqueness of Tenganan Villagers

Uniquely, the teaching of manners and traditions in Tenganan Village to their children is not formal but during ceremonies that provide real meaning and lessons. Tenganan villagers prioritize balance in different ways. This fits their teachings is Hindu Law of Indra called Tri Hita Karana which maintains a balanced relationship between humans with humans, humans with nature, humans, and God. Nevertheless, in the village of Tenganan there is a traditional social structure in the form of 10 groups with different roles of a person towards the village and the main function task of each is to create different levels of social status between groups. These groups are Sanghyang, Ngijeng, Batu Pemberdayaan Witch, Batu Pemberdayaan, Empak Buluh, Prajurit, Pande Mas, Pande Eisen, Pasek, and Bendesa.

Generally, every family in the Tenganan Village community must carry out the tebenan ritual in accordance with the applicable sequences or procedures, there is no distinction between people who have a high economic class or someone who is considered to have a special position in society. Each family carries out the tebenan ceremony in accordance with existing customary rules. The difference in the ceremony carried out is based on the size of the event carried out based on their economic level. The next ritual or traditional ceremony performed by the people of Tenganan Village is the marriage ceremony. The marriage system adopted by the Tenganan Village community is a parental system, women and men in the family have the same degree and are entitled to be heirs. This is what makes Tenganan Village different from other villages.

They are also bound by awig-awig (customary law) which requires marriages to be conducted with fellow Tenganan villagers. If this is violated, the resident is not allowed to become a village krama (citizen). This means that they must leave Tenganan Village and the husband and wife will be physically banished (maselong) for some time to a place far from their place of origin.  However, this law has been abandoned since 1951.

 Continuing with the unique rituals in Tenganan Village, the death ceremony or commonly called luanan. Someone who dies in the Tenganan Village community is placed in the middle Bale (Madia Mandala), this bale is usually called Bale Duluan. A person who dies in the Tenganan Village Community will be buried in the local traditional grave in a completely naked condition because the Tenganan Village community has a unique philosophy that they were born completely naked (without clothes and all kinds of worldly elements), then they will die again in a state without clothes and worldly elements as well.
