Providing sex education to children is often considered a taboo. In fact, sex education should be given early as a debriefing of children to deal with sexual and reproductive attitudes that might befall their lives in the future. Sex education has means understanding about human sexual anatomy, reproduction, sexual relations and other human sexual behavior (Oxford dictionary).Â
Meanwhile, according to Gawshi (Yusuf Madani, 2003; 91), sex education is the provision of the right knowledge and preparing to adapt well to future sexual attitudes in life. So that when children grow up to be a teenager, they have acquired the right logical tendency towards sexual and reproductive problems.Â
Observing the above opinion, sex education is a provision through rules that regulate sexual behavior to deal with sexual and reproductive attitudes that might affect life in the future (Safrudin Aziz, 2015; 15). Therefore, sex education is very important.
The importance of sex education is given from an early age with the following objectives. First, increase knowledge about physical or biological growth. Research conducted by Kakavoulis (1998; 37-41) stated that through sex education, children will have knowledge about their bodies, be able to distinguish self-identity and improve emotional stability.Â
Second, protecting children from sexual abuse. Some time ago it was reported in the mass media about cases of sexual violence in the form of pedophilia. A number of children from kindergarten to junior high school are victims. According to Kaplan, Saddok, Greb (1991: 676), there are two forms of strong sexual impulse from pedophile sufferers; that is by touch and without touch. Nearly 60% of pedophile victims in the form of touch are men while 90% of female victims are without touch.Â
Third, preventing underage pregnancies, preventing free sex and reducing prostitution, in anticipation of HIV / AIDS transmission through sexual relations freely (Safrudin Aziz, 2015; 29).
Sex education is very important because of the rampant cases of sexual violence that occur among teenagers and even early childhood. According to data collected by the Indonesian Child Protection Commission's Data and Information Center, the percentage of cases of sexual abuse or crime in Indonesia is increasing every year.Â
In 2010, there were 2,046 cases, among 42% of sexual crime. In 2011, there were 2,426 cases, 58% were cases of sexual crime. In 2012, there were 2,637 cases, 62% of cases of sexual crime. In 2013, there was a significant increase in this case, that was 3,339 cases with 62% sexual crimes (Aziz Safrudin, 2015; 45).Â
This caused concern for parents. High curiosity in children is also a factor in the importance of sex education for children. Children's curiosity is usually asked through questions about the differences in body parts between men and women. In this case, parents must have a sharp sensitivity to think of anything that exist in the minds of children (Ajen Dianawati, 2003; 3).Â
Furthermore, the reason for sex education is very important due to the impact of technological development that is not directed. Moreover, the phenomenon that occurs in millennials, the gadget is something that cannot be avoided from early childhood.
After knowing the meaning, purpose, and importance of sex education. Here are ways that parents can do in providing sex education to children. First, introduce body parts that others may or may not be touched. Parents can start by teaching children about their fingers, toes, knees, and nose when the child is a few months old (Roqib, 2008; 1-12).Â
