How to Design a Speaking Rubric for Senior High School: First Experience

Learning English has become a compulsory thing needed by everyone especially students at school. Not only students, being an English teacher, we still need to learn English. Besides, as a teacher, we have a lot of obligations to do such as, teaching students, mastering English material, designing a lesson plan or even designing a rubric for each subject to give a target for students to achieve every material given.

Now, I am trying to make one rubric of speaking subject exactly for senior high school students. This is my first experience making this kind of rubric, in order I can have such a value or criteria to assess my students competence in speaking subject. This is not what I was expected, I expected that making this rubric was so complicated. It turns out that the rubric has done by me optimally.

Let me start telling you about my opinion making this rubric, what should be the first item need to be achieved by students in speaking subject. In my opinion, fluency should the first thing student have to be able to, because speaking subject means that student are able to deliver their idea by speaking English fluently. Second, students should be able to pronounce every single word correctly and they have to try to speak like a native speaker. Next is content, because I am making rubric for senior high school students, so content should become one important element to be assessed. Student should prepare a good topic to deliver, they have to elaborate their opinion in order to train their critical thinking. The last but not least is Grammar and vocabulary. Why I put it in the last item? Because I think the level of senior high school, they already known how to use correct grammatical rules and what appropriate vocabularies they should use in their speaking.

All in one, making rubric of speaking was so interesting. By making this, I can learn how to make rubric for my future students. I get more knowledge, because I should think what should be assessed in speaking subject.
