"What are you talking about?" you would probably say, "balloons do fly". Balloons don't fly, they float, and the balloon itself (the rubber shell) doesn't float, the air makes it float. Balloons are very elastic rubber filled with helium or just plain air, with helium, the balloon floats, with air, the balloon doesn't float. Hot air balloons work by putting fire under the base of the balloon. The fire produces hot air, and hot air goes up, so, it takes the balloon up.
Blimps or zeppelins also use the same principle as hot air balloons, they fly with gas, but, unlike the hot air balloon it can move forward at its own power like an airplane. But, the use of blimps or zeppelins have declined ever since the Hindenburg disaster, that happened on May 6th, 1973. The Hindenburg disaster was caused by a spark, that ignited the leaking hydrogen.
On these vehicles, we have to be careful not to bring any sharp objects that can puncture the floating mechanism (the balloon). People are trying to make a blimp that is used for public transport like an airplane, plus, its bigger and better. But a hot air balloon ride might be a cheaper way for sightseeing, rather than a helicopter ride. Hot air balloons are significantly cheaper (usually 129$ to 300$) than a helicopter(200$ to 2.000$) source: www.groupon.com
There's also a cool little thing that you can make with balloons, a wind powered car! It looks something like this you make the wheels by putting sticks through the plastic bowl and putting bottlecaps on the end, the engine you make by putting a balloon on the end of a straw and rubber banding it to the straw so it doesn't fly away.
