Gunakan Beberapa Idiom Ini Untuk Meningkatkan Nilai IELTS Speaking Anda

Kita dapat menggunakan idiom untuk menunjukkan kemampuan kita dalam memberikan jawaban dalam IELTS Speaking. Beberapa idiom yang paling sering digunakan adalah:

• Get out of hand: Ini bisa digunakan untuk menunjukkan kondisi di sekitarmu yang tidak dapat dikendalikan. Contoh:  The protest got out of hand as the people started to set things on fire.
• Pull yourself together: Saat kamu merasa khawatir atau bingung dan tidak dapat berpikir jernih. Kalau begitu kamu harus menenangkan diri dan berperilaku selayaknya. Contoh: As employees in a multinational company, you experience a lot of stress but you have to pull yourself together and give your best effort.
• Once in a blue moon: Sesuatu yang sangat jarang terjadi. Contoh: We used to see him all the time, but now he just visits us once in a blue moon.
• Go the extra mile: Melakukan sesuatu yang lebih demi tercapainya sebuah tujuan. Contoh: My boss is an example of a great leader as he went the extra mile for every project that we have.
• A piece of cake: Sesuatu hal yang mudah dilakukan. Contoh: After experiencing such wonderful experience when working abroad, leading this project is a piece of cake for me.
• Cool as a cucumber: Digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan seseorang yang selalu bersikap tenang. Contoh: My friend in high school is as cool as a cucumber when she speaks in front of big audiences.
• Blessing in disguise: Idiom ini memberi pelajaran bahwa terkadang apa terlihat buruk, justru memiliki manfaat yang tak terduga. Contoh: After I graduated from university, I was rejected by all the companies I applied to but I think this was a blessing in disguise as I got a full scholarship to study abroad after all the hardships I faced.
• Cut corners: Penyelesaian suatu tugas dengan cepat namun ceroboh. Contoh: As good employees, we need to do our work thoroughly. Contoh: You cannot cut corners just to finish them quickly.
• Call it a day: Berhenti sejenak dari pengerjaan suatu proyek ketika kita telah sampai pada titik yang cukup baik untuk beristirahat. Contoh: The meeting I had with my colleagues took a very long time and eventually, I had to call it a day as I saw everyone was getting tired.
• Hands are tied: Suatu keadaan dimana kita tidak mempunyai waktu untuk melakukan aktivitas yang kita inginkan dengan bebas. Contoh: I wanted to help my classmate with his speech for tomorrow's class but my hands are tied at the moment.
• On the same page: Dua orang atau lebih yang memiliki pemahaman yang sama tentang suatu hal. Contoh: When I was discussing with my friends about what gift I should buy for my mom, we were on the same page as all of said jewellery.
• Raise the bar: Menetapkan standar menjadi lebih tinggi daripada sebelumnya. Contoh: As technology has evolved significantly in the past decade, may companies have set the bar on how products should be made.
• Stay ahead of the curve: Mempertahankan posisi produk atau perusahaan yang sudah baik pada sebuah kurva. Contoh: As the industry is more competitive, we have to stay ahead of the curve when developing new products and services.
• A close call: Idiom ini memiliki arti lolos dari kejadian yang tidak menyenangkan yang hampir menimpa kita dan digunakan ketika hampir mengalami kejadian yang buruk. Contoh: She had several close calls before she had the accident so she should've been more careful.
• In someone's shoes: Kita harus mencoba untuk memposisikan diri kita dalam keadaan orang lain. Contoh: I wouldn't like to be in his shoes when his boss finds out what happened with the important meeting.
• Give someone the benefit of doubt: Ungkapan ini punya makna bahwa setidaknya kita memberikan kepercayaan pada perkataan orang lain terlepas apakah pernyataannya terbukti benar atau salah. Contoh: We should never judge someone instantly and should give someone the benefit of doubt.
• Beat around the bush: Bertele-tele. Contoh: As Indonesians, we tend to beat around the bush when asking favours. This is very different than in the western countries.
• Know the ropes: Digunakan untuk menggambarkan kamu atau seseorang mengetahui seluk beluk atau rincian dari sesuatu. Contoh: My friend works in the IT industry and knows the ropes when it comes to programming.
• It slipped my mind: Ungkapan ini digunakan ketika ada hal yang terlupa. Contoh: I should met with my father this morning but due to my hectic morning it slipped my mind.
