In a world that is rapidly transforming—technologically, socially, and culturally—we can no longer rely on rote memorization in education. Today’s world demands individuals who can think critically, solve problems effectively, and develop innovative solutions. This is where the application of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) becomes crucial, especially in the context of language learning.

This article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the importance of HOTS in language learning, its benefits for students' cognitive and social development, and implementation strategies that teachers can apply in the classroom. The author also elaborates on actual examples and the relevance of HOTS in developing 21st-century competencies based on the latest educational literature and policies.

What Is HOTS in Language Learning?

HOTS refers to the highest cognitive levels in Bloom’s revised taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001): analyzing, evaluating, and creating. In language learning, HOTS encourages students not only to memorize vocabulary or grammatical structures but to evaluate texts, critique information, build arguments, and generate original ideas through language. This means students are not just learning to use language, but to think through it.

For example, in writing classes, students are not merely asked to rewrite texts, but to write opinion essays on current issues. In speaking activities, they not only respond to closed-ended questions but also engage in debates or share critical reflections on social phenomena.

Why Is HOTS Important in Language Learning?

HOTS is not just an abstract concept in modern education—it is a concrete necessity to address the challenges of our time. In an age flooded with conflicting information and complex communication contexts, students must be more than passive users of language. They need to interpret, analyze, and respond to various texts and situations with intellectual and emotional intelligence. Therefore, HOTS in language learning lays a vital foundation for nurturing a generation capable of speaking and writing well, while also thinking deeply, creatively, and critically in using language as a tool for understanding and transforming society.

With HOTS, students learn to assess the accuracy of information, consider multiple viewpoints, and present ideas supported by evidence. In a classroom discussion about news, for example, they may be asked to analyze media bias or respond to an issue from different perspectives. Research by Zohar & Dori (2003) has shown that students trained in critical thinking have stronger reading comprehension and are better at transferring knowledge across contexts.

HOTS-based language learning also encourages creativity. Students may write short stories based on social issues, create vlogs on local culture, or produce digital poetry. According to Trilling & Fadel (2009), creativity is a key 21st-century skill that should be explicitly developed in the language curriculum.

Additionally, HOTS sharpens students’ problem-solving abilities. In language classes, they might be tasked with writing persuasive texts for behavioral change campaigns or simulating negotiations in international conflicts. Hmelo-Silver (2004) notes that problem-based learning approaches that emphasize analysis and problem-solving are highly effective for enhancing HOTS.

Moreover, HOTS is highly relevant to real-world demands. Students who are trained to think critically and reflectively tend to be better prepared for challenges in communication, negotiation, and collaboration. UNESCO (2021) has emphasized that higher-order thinking skills are foundational to building sustainable and competitive societies.
