The originator of postmodernist thought, the first time was Arnold Toynbee in 1939. while Charles Jencks also emphasized that the concept of postmodernism was born the writing of a Spanish Frederico de Onis. Toynbee is considered as the originator of the term. This is proven by his famous book entitled Study of History. In 1960, the term postmodernism succeeded in penetrating the European continent so that many European thinkers began interested in that thought.

Postmodernism is an idea movement that replaces the ideas of the modern age. The modern era is characterized by the prioritization of ratio, objectivity, totality, structuralization /systematization, single universalization and progress sains. The principle of postmodernism is the widening of boundaries and the distinction between cultures high with low culture, between appearance and reality, between symbol and reality, between universal and peripherals and all other binary opposition.

postmodernism is also one of those terms "Umbrella" all schools of thought are often not related to one another. In postmodernism ideas such as "philosophy", "rationality" and "epistemology" radically questioned again. The problem of postmodernism is a problem language limitations, especially the limitations of the very limited descriptive function of language. Language must be seen through its transformative function. A metaphor was first introduced by Ricoeur who can shed some light on the issues raised by postmodernism. Metaphors do not show an absolute truth, but rather a "Tension of truth". Postmodern social theory experiences disagreement and flow between each character:

First, referred to as extreme postmodernists, who argue that modern society has been replaced by postmodern society. Jean Baudrillard is a frequent thinkers categorized as this group, because he believes that society has changed in a manner radical.

Second is moderate postmodernism, which reveals that change has indeed been happened, and postmodernity grew along with modernity.

Third referred to as a theoretical position, this group argues: rather than questioning modernity and postmodernity as an era of history or time, it is better to see modernity and postmodernity as a force that is always in a relationship that goes hand in hand one another. Dengah put postmodernity on an ongoing effort. to always show the limitations of modernity.
