Measuring foreign language speaking skills, such as English speaking skills, is important in the language learning process. Therefore, in language teaching, speaking assessment rubrics are often used to objectively evaluate students' abilities. In this essay, I will share my personal experience in creating a speaking assessment rubric as my final project.

Experience of Creating a Speaking Assessment Rubric:

I am a sixth-semester student who got a final assignment to create a rubric, I decided to create a speaking assessment rubric. The first step I took was to determine relevant and significant assessment criteria. These criteria should reflect the speaking skills I want to assess, such as correct use of grammar, fluency, clarity of ideas, use of appropriate vocabulary, and interaction with the other person.

After determining the assessment criteria, I created a rating scale consisting of several levels. This grading scale will provide an overview of the extent to which students achieve the predetermined criteria. For example, my grading scale consists of four levels: superior, good, fair, and needs improvement. Students who reach the "superior" level will have excellent speaking skills with the correct use of grammar, high fluency, clear ideas, and extensive use of vocabulary.

Next, I developed detailed descriptions for each level in the scoring rubric. These descriptions provide clear guidance on what is expected of each level of speaking ability. For example, in the "good" level, I would describe that students should have adequate grammar, but there may be some minor errors, and a fairly fluent but occasionally stammering speaking fluency.

Benefits of the Speaking Assessment Rubric:

The use of a speaking assessment rubric has several significant benefits. First, it provides clear guidelines for students on what is expected of them in terms of speaking ability. They can see the assessment criteria in detail and understand the steps that need to be taken to improve their skills.

Secondly, the assessment rubric also helps teachers to provide specific feedback to students. teachers can show them areas where they have succeeded and areas that need improvement. This feedback motivates students to keep improving their speaking skills.

In addition, speaking assessment rubrics also help in a fair and objective assessment process. By using the same rubric for all students, I can assess their speaking skills consistently and objectively. This prevents any judgment based on personal preferences or subjective views.

Creating a speaking assessment rubric was a valuable experience for me as an English teacher. It provides clear guidance for students in improving their speaking skills and helps in giving constructive feedback. By using the speaking assessment rubric, we can create a more effective learning experience and provide fair and objective assessment to our students.
