"Soekarno, Our Independence Hero"

Before the reading of the text of the proclamation on 17 August 1945, there were important events that should not be forgotten. The important event is the struggle of the figures or freedom fighters to be able to immediately free Indonesia. 

Beginning On August 12, 1945, through Marshal Terauchi in Dalat, Vietnam, told Soekarno, Hatta, and Radjiman that the Japanese government would soon grant independence to Indonesia. Nonetheless, Japan wanted Indonesian independence on 24 August. 

Two days later, when Soekarno, Hatta, and Radjiman returned to Indonesia from Dalat, Syahrir forced Soekarno to immediately proclaim independence because assuming the results of the meeting in Dalat as a Japanese trick.

August 16, 1945, the force on the backdrop by the followers of Sutan Syahrir who wanted the takeover of power by Indonesia from Japan increasingly culminating and uncontrollable. During the day they gather at Hatta's house, and around 10 pm at Soekarno's house. About 15 youths demanded Sukarno immediately proclaim independence via radio, followed by a takeover of power. They also rejected the PPKI plan to proclaim independence on 16 August.

From the debates with the youth leaders, including Chaerul Saleh who joined in the underground movement, in the early hours of August 16, 1945, they kidnapped Sukarno (along with Fatmawati and Guntur), and Hatta, in Rengasdengklok, later renamed "Rengasdengklok Event". In the abduction, it was intended to convince Soekarno that Japan had surrendered and that the fighters were ready to fight the Japanese.

In the evening, Soekarno and Hatta returned to Jakarta to meet General Yamamoto, the Japanese commander in Java. From that meeting, Soekarno and Hatta became convinced that Japan had surrendered to the Allies, and had no further authority to grant independence.

After it was believed that the situation made it possible to read the text of the proclamation, Soekarno, Hatta and other PPKI members that night were also meeting and preparing the text of the Proclamation. The meeting was at the house of Admiral Maeda, Soekarno along with other struggling figures writing the proclamation script.The article then typed by Sayuti Melik.
