Kompasiana | Nusa Lembongan, Saturday, 8 June 2019 - Joining an action initiated by Coral Triangle Center (CTC), in this celebration of World Ocean Day, Maison Aurelia - Sanur is adopting baby corals.

Widely known as "rainforests of the sea", coral reefs are the largest structures on earth of biological origin. Coral reefs support some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Thousands of marine animals depend on coral reefs for survival, including some species of sea turtles, fish, crabs, shrimp, jellyfish, sea birds, starfish, and more. Not only beneficial for marine life, coral reefs are also produce up to 85% of the oxygen in the air humans breathe - a shocking fact that not everyone's aware of.

Despite all the good things coral reefs have done for humans and marine wildlife, unfortunately, 25% of coral reefs all over the world are irrevocably damaged. Destructive fishing practices, coral mining, climate change and pollution  are some of the reasons behind their plight.

Conducted by representatives of each department at Maison Aurelia, accompanied with Marine Biologist and divers from Coral Triangle Center, Maison Aurelia is giving its real contribution to a healthy ocean by adopting corals and planting them directly to its nursery. The coral planting will be done in the Nusa Lembongan waters. The process will take around 1 hour in the morning. The planting process will start by bringing baby corals using a small boat to the nursery located around 500 metres off the shoreline. Then professional divers will strategically place coral reef fragments in a meticulous placement where there is enough sunlight and flow of water.

"Not only stop here, Maison Aurelia will continuously support Coral Triangle Center efforts by promoting and encouraging our guests to visiting the center, learn about corals and adopting a lot more baby corals. We need to act now if we want to protect coral for future generations. Small, daily actions can help reduce coral reefs loss", said Nigel Douwes, General Manager of Maison Aurelia. (Ray)
