The Relationship of Sleep and Productivity

Old-fashioned understanding believes that to be successful man, he or she should lessen sleeping time. They should add their working hour to increase their productivity. However, the old-fashioned understanding is not suitable anymore with current circumstance. Having sufficient sleeping time can affect the productivity of someone. By this essay, I am going to describe about the relationship of sleeping time and the increased of productivity. Hopefully, this essay will benefit for you all who read this essay.

In sophisticated world like today, there are numerous people who do not have sufficient time for sleep. Employees, for instance, often have little time to sleep because they have plenty of tasks to be finished at the office. Employees in big city such as Jakarta often come home late due to congestion. Most CEO all over the world does not have sufficient time for sleeping as well as the ordinary employees. Another example is students. Students nowadays do not have sufficient time for sleeping. They must study until late night due to a lot of course materials and tasks, while some other students spend their night to play video games. Do they know that sleep deprivation can have detrimental effects for productivity?

Sleep is very important for body. It is a way for body to recover its conditions after doing activities whole day. Brain requires sleep about seven to nine hours a day to remove the toxic protein in the neurons. The toxic is produced by neural activity when we are awake. It will remain in brain when body do not get enough sleeping time. The toxic impair your ability to think which cannot be fixed by amount of caffeine. The negative effects of it are that it slows our ability to process information, to solve problems, and to hamper our creativity which badly influences our productivity. The negative effects of sleep deprivation can be so great that people who are drunk outperform those lacking sleep.

In addition, stress also influences the productivity of someone. Stress does not only negatively affect career of the employees but also health. Stress can trigger heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Those diseases are the main cause of the death in developed world like today. There is an interesting fact that many successful people are less anxious than we may think. It does not mean that they are little in facing stressful situation, but they can manage their stress well.

To sum up, based on the description above we realize that how important sleep to improve our productivity. We cannot ignore the adequacy of time for sleep if we want to have better productivity. If someone cannot have sufficient sleeping time, he or she can start to find out how to improve the quality of sleep. Stress, on the other hand, is also very influential in both career and health. Managing stress properly can improve our productivity as well as our health. Thus, to have better life and career, we should keep the balance in our life either as an employee or an ordinary man.
