[caption caption="3dprinting.com"][/caption]The future is here. 3D printing allows for small simple plastic made objects to be printed or created at home. There is the choice between downloading a preexisting design or creating your own via modeling software. Price range for 3D printers come to as low as $1000 to up to $20000 while the possibilities of what could be created are endless; Toys, action figures, models, spare parts, mugs.

The supercar Koenigsegg One used many 3D printed parts during the manufacturing process. The technology has also become useful in medical applications for swapping out broken body parts. Its versatility makes it an easy option for hospitals and its ease of use makes it an interesting option for schools wanting students to experiment. Although he downside although is that when 3D printers become commonplace many manufacturers will lose their jobs

Another word for 3D printing is additive manufacturing. Building the object goes by one layer at a time. The speed of the process depends on the size, complexity of the design and lastly method. There are also printers that can print metal parts but are generally more expensive. Metallic powder of aluminum or steel is melted by lasers to form those layers. Printing metal in fact produces that of better quality compared to melting and die casting. Thermoplastics of powder or liquid are a more common material used followed by rubber and ceramics.

A problem that arises from being able to create or recreate anything is copyright. Counterfeit cellphones, gadgets and shoes are commonplace among the streets of Indonesia and introducing 3D printing might add to that.

Another problem that might occur is the illegal production of 3d printed guns. One could theoretically imitate and recreate each gun component. This puts society at a risk as criminals would have easier access for weapons or possibly endanger a kid with an aptitude and curiosity. According to Wikipedia, “Proposed legislation to ban 3D printing of weapons may deter, but cannot completely prevent their production”. Adding to that, Professor Hob Lipson suggests limiting or controlling gunpowder production instead.

All in all 3d printing provides an easy way to make what you want. Copy and create a spare key, build a toy for your son or replace that broken motorcycle fender. 3D printing renews the age of mass production into build what you want when you want it.
