Roads anywhere in Indonesia without a doubt have a speed limit that serves to protect. Speed itself does not kill. It’s the momentary change of speed delivering large amounts of force in a fraction of a second. Speed limits and driving at a moderate rate drastically decreases the chance of a disaster. It also gives the driver more time to react to an obstacle.

It may seem contradictory, but there exists a public freeway without a speed limit. The Germans call it the Autobahn; a highway network expanding all across Germany providing fast transportation from city to city. The autobahn project first started in 1920 but lacked the funding to actually take off. A decade later, Adolf Hitler fully supported the idea of the autobahn as a motorized roadway. In 1936 130,000 jobs were created in the process of constructing the highway. By WWII its intent was expected to be for military transportation. However, tanks with their caterpillar tracks ruined the concrete as they passed by while trucks carrying supplies were less efficient compared to trains. They proceeded to prove use as a propaganda tool that spread to ears across the world.

Today it’s known to be the highway without a speed limit. To any racer fanatic or car enthusiast’s imagination this is dream road. But in reality it’s not very far different to any other highway and according to german-way.com traffic jams are common. So it’s less of the speeding Buggati and Koenigsegg passing by every minute. Some vehicles are restricted to their given speed limit such as heavy semi-trailer trucks and buses with standing passengers. Vehicles that do not reach the lowest speeds are not allowed on the highway but occasionally you will see strong motorbikes passing by.

It’s also worth noting that the autobahn network is not speed limit free. In some areas that are under construction, urban areas, accident prone and interchanges or in the case of bad weather the speed limit comes into play and is strictly enforced. Other than that the long stretches of road are there for speeding by.

Comparing the fatality rates from highways of USA and Germany might become surprising. It turns out Germany with the speed free autobahn has a lower rate than the USA with speed limits. Germany’s autobahn is much safer. There are many factors that have an effect including culture and maintenance.

“Germans don’t patch up cracks and potholes on the autobahn. Instead, they replace entire sections of roads.” -blog.leatherup.com

In the USA driving is a sign of maturity which makes rising the driving age from 16 to 18 complicated. Drivers must go through rigorous training at a cost heavy price in Germany and drinking or eating, using a cell phone is completely ruled out.
