(Images) Occupy Jakarta Begins In Indonesia

The global movement Occupy Wall Street or the 99% protest spread to Indonesia as dozens of people participated in Occupy Jakarta peaceful protest in front of Jakarta Stock Exchange. Jakarta, Indonesia. 19/10/2011.

In the demonstration, each participants were given time to voice their concerns. Concerns expressed ranged from inequality, foreign corporations domination in Indonesian economy, low labor wage to discrimination towards homosexuals, consumptive lifestyle, and inhumane living conditions of Jakarta. Participants came from different backgrounds, from employees, NGO workers, artists. Numerous police and security guards, including a water cannon were dispatched to keep conditions secure and the 3-hour-long protest went on peacefully.

Occupy Jakarta started in Twitter and Facebook conversations. It is expected to spread to other Indonesian cities with the label Occupy Indonesia. The movement aims to maintain itself as leaderless movement. Unlike Occupy protests in other countries, Occupy Jakarta protesters didn't stay at the protest site, but they vowed to conduct the protest daily until a "revolutionary change" happens, according to Sari, one of the initiatior of the protest.
