Nadiem Makarim, the minister of education, announced a change in policy that will no longer require a thesis to graduate from a domestic university. This aims to improve the quality of graduates by not placing limits on graduation requirements or it could also be part of independent learning. The form of graduation requirements does not have to be a thesis, it can be a prototype, project, or other similar final assignment.
The latest Menteri Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset, dan Teknologi (Mendikbudristek) regulation also removes the obligation for master's (S2) and doctoral (S3) graduates to publish scientific papers in accredited journals or scientific journals. With this new policy, Nadiem emphasized that the government is not removing the thesis as a graduation requirement, but the graduation requirement can be transferred to another option. With this regulation, universities are given the freedom to design their own student graduation standards.
