People mostly know the history of Hitler and Jewish. I was surprised, he brought a sentimental theme to the screenplay. We know that the director of this movie is a Jewish descendant, his own grandfather was a Russian Jew, who is a New Zealand native, Taika Waititi. Waititi gently and too courageously adapted it, from the 2004 novel Christine Leunens “Caging Skies”, to a comedy film which is touching and worth watching by public or even the facists.
It is more than a Roberto Benigni’s Holocaust comedy “Life Is Beautiful” or “The Great Dictator” by Charlie Chaplin (which won the Oscar). Jojo Rabbit is a satrical humor-drama film that tells the story of a 10-year-old Nazi, Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), who has an imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi).
Fuhrer, in his trademark uniform, is very gorgeous to play his role in accordance with a little man’s imagination. Jumping up, screaming like a kid rather than as a great dictator. By the background of the 40’s, Hitler Youth camp, and in a war country, this movie is given a lot of colors that humored the eyes. And, this movie can be assumed as a children’s playground.
He correctly inserted the touch of The great Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”. Waititi (who successfully directed Thor: Ragnarok) wants to transparently show us how close the relationship between Little Nazi and his best imaginary friend. Sequently, Jojo’s life becomes complicated when he knows that his mother, Rosie (stared by Scarlet Johansson) is secretly anti-Nazi, hiding a Jewish girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), in his house.
In fact, Waititi had written the movie script in 2011 and almost made him hopeless to run it, even the script was ever rejected by several producers (as reported by Variety). Because the story adapted is quite sensitive. And we know, this film won Oscar on February 2020 with “Best Adapted Screenplay” nomination. Although Jojo Rabbit is like a children playground, it make us more aware that facist beliefs can easily damage a nation.
