Making a Whip Costume Design in The Kemasan Village of Kediri City by KKN Students, State University Of Malang

What is Costume Design?

Costume design is a fashion design which, in its form and function, understands and knows the values related to topics such as philosophical, historical, ethical values, fashion aesthetics (costumes)/movement and religious values. Well, a dance must have certain characteristics to distinguish it from other dances.

So the UM students made the whip dance costume design because this dance did not yet have a special design. The whip dance is a typical dance of the Kemasan Village which is included in 10 Cool Villages in the City of Kediri, the dance costume design is commanded by Pak Hadi as a community leader who took part in the development of the whip dance in the Kemasan Village.

The costume design was designed by Bagus and Jihan as students of the Malang State University Community Service Program and other members who contributed to the idea of making the whip dance costume. The costume of the whip dance consists of udeng, shirt, t-shirt, pants, belt and jarik.

Where each of these parts is combined with the ikat motif used using the typical style of the city of Kediri. In addition to the combination of the woven fabric motifs, also apply the purple color to the costume design. This purple color refers to the typical color of the city of Kediri.

In the process of making the costume, there were several obstacles. Among them are revisions in the initial draft of the costume design. Not only has it been revised not once but up to 3 revisions. Starting from the basic colors, clothes, laying the typical Kediri motif to the model of the clothes.
