HERMENEUTICS AND PRAXIS
One of the most challenging, intriguing, and important motifs in Gadamer's work is his effort to link his ontological hermeneutics with the tradition of practical philosophy, especially as it is rooted in Aristotle's understanding of praxis and phronsis. Gadamer is well aware that initially this may seem to be a strange connection.
After all, hermeneutics has been primarily concerned with the understanding and interpretation of texts, and this was certainly not Aristotle's concern in his ethical and political writings. Gadamer tells us, It is true that Aristotle is not concerned with the hermeneutical problem and certainly not with its historical dimension, but with the right estimation of the role that reason has to play in moral action.
But precisely what is of interest to us here is that he is concerned with reason and with knowledge, not detached from a being that is becoming, but determined by it and determinative of it.
Hermeneutika dan Praktis
Salah satu yang paling menantang, bikin penasaran, dan bermotif penting dalam karya Gadamer adalah upayanya menghubungkan hermeneutika ontologisnya dengan tradisi filsafat praksis, terutama yang berakar pada pemahaman Aristoteles tentang praksis dan fronesis.
Gadamer sangat sadar awalnya ini mungkin tampak memiliki hubungan yang aneh. Terlebih, hermeneutika terutama memberi perhatian pada pengertian dan interpretasi teks, dan tentu saja hal ini bukan fokus Aristoteles dalam tulisan-tulisan etika dan politiknya.
Menurut Gamamer, memang benar Aristoteles tidak fokus kepada masalah hermeneutika dan tidak dengan dimensi historinya, tetapi dengan estimasi yang tepat dari peran nalar dalam kaitannya dengan tindakan moral. Tetapi justru apa yang menarik bagi kita, ia memberi perhatian pada nalar dan pengetahuan, tidak terlepas dari keberadaan, tetapi ditentukan olehnya dan menentukan keberadaan manusia.
