Thailand is known for its iconic lantern or light festivals. Yi Peng is a famous floating lantern festival held in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. Yi Peng is a lantern festival celebrated during the full moon of the second month of the lunar calendar. Yi Peng has two meanings. Yi means two, and peng means full moon day. Yi Peng is also referred to as the sky lantern festival (khom loi), because at the peak of the event there will be the release of hundreds of lanterns into the sky by people. Like a fairy tale, the night sky looks so beautiful, decorated with thousands of luminous lanterns that shine like stars, accompanied by festive fireworks. The release of lanterns aims to release bad luck and wish for good luck in the future. In addition, this festival also symbolizes the transition from darkness to light.
