From my five years in journalism before moving into the development sector, I've learned some invaluable tips about crafting effective editorial design. My experience writing features, essays, and human interest stories---where I interviewed a diverse array of individuals, from physicians and public figures to creative workers, NGO representatives, entrepreneurs, and even celebrities---has shaped my approach to editorial design.

Each story had a unique purpose and audience, and understanding this distinction was critical to delivering meaningful content. This experience emphasised that knowing your audience and purpose is fundamental to creating a design that resonates.

Structuring content effectively is another lesson I picked up during my journalism career. A strong hierarchy guides readers through the article, helping them grasp the main points and engage with the text without becoming overwhelmed. Whether the goal was to inform, inspire, or spark change, clear organisation made stories impactful and memorable.

Imagery and graphics are also key to a successful editorial design. Working alongside photographers, we'd plan every visual detail, deciding on shots that best complemented the article's message. We'd discuss which angles would most powerfully convey the subject's story and impact our readers.

These collaborations helped ensure that the visuals weren't merely decorative but essential elements that enhanced storytelling.

Typography, colour schemes, grid systems, and white space were often the result of close coordination with the artistic department and photographers. Together, we'd map out layouts that harmonised text and images to create a coherent, engaging design.

Selecting fonts that aligned with the story's tone, a colour palette that supported the mood, and a grid structure that kept everything organised were critical to a seamless reader experience. We also used white space strategically to allow each component to breathe, avoiding visual clutter and enhancing readability.

The final touches that enhance an editorial design include ensuring easy navigation, accessibility, and interactivity in digital publications. While perhaps less immediately noticeable, these supporting factors are crucial to creating a publication that is visually appealing, functional, and engaging.
