India Return to Sub 100 FIFA Ranking: In a momentous achievement, the Indian men's football team has made its way back into the coveted sub-100 FIFA ranking for the first time since 2018. The team's remarkable performance in the SAFF Championship saw them ascend one spot to secure the 99th position in the latest FIFA chart.

The SAFF Championship, held in Bengaluru earlier this month, witnessed India's triumph against formidable opponents, Lebanon and Kuwait, in the semifinal and final matches, respectively. The team showcased their resilience and determination, clinching victories through thrilling penalty shootouts.

Lebanon also experienced a slight elevation in the rankings, securing the 100th spot, trailing just below India. Meanwhile, Kuwait displayed significant progress, moving up four places to occupy the 137th position in the FIFA chart.

The inclusion of West Asian powerhouses Lebanon and Kuwait in the SAFF Championship added to the intensity of the tournament, ensuring fierce competition among the participating teams.

India's commendable performance has garnered them 1208.69 points, contributing to their momentous return to the sub-100 FIFA ranking. The nation's best FIFA ranking was achieved in 1996 when they soared to the 94th position. Notably, India also attained the 99th spot in 1993 and further achieved the 96th ranking in both 2017 and 2018. Last month, India was placed in the 100th position.

Top 5 FIFA Rankings


The top spot in the FIFA rankings remains securely held by world champions Argentina, followed closely by football giants France, Brazil, England, and Belgium.

In the Asian context, Japan leads the charge at the impressive 20th spot, showcasing their football prowess on the global stage. Iran follows closely in the 22nd position, while Australia, Korea, and Saudi Arabia rank 27th, 28th, and 54th, respectively, among the top five Asian football nations.

This resurgence of India's football team in the FIFA rankings marks a significant milestone for the country's footballing legacy. The triumph in the SAFF Championship has highlighted the team's potential and their ability to compete at a higher level.
