When someone mentions "grammar" in learning English, what is the initial thought or image that pops into your mind? Perhaps, its significance in terms of learning English, how it helps students to avoid misinterpretations, how it is that provides substance and relevance to a piece of writing, or it is simply the very basic thing in learning the language because it deals with sentences or syntax?

There is no doubt that in formal contexts, namely at school or in the workplace, grammar is very principal. Because a good knowledge of grammar can improve the quality and ability of our communication with others to be more effective in any condition.

However, learning grammar, let alone mastering it, is rarely a pleasurable experience. It can be quite dull, especially for kids or young learners. Not only is it quite challenging for them when they try to understand it, and coupled with the fact English is not a commonly spoken language, it can lead to a lack of motivation for them to even try to learn it. We also can't forget that the manner in which young learners process an information or acquire knowledge differs from the way teens or adults do it. They have different motivations to learn—some do so because their school demands it - it is part of their school curriculum, and some others do so only because their parents make them. With this in mind, it is crucial to find ways to make learning this complex topic engaging and enjoyable. To whip invigorate a liking for grammar, here are some fun strategies that parents or teachers can try with their young learners!

1. Uplift a passion for reading in your kids.

One of the best ways to improve their grammar skills is by reading. In reality, when children read an enjoyable book, they can see how the author constructed their sentences and why they used specific grammar. When kids learn sentence structure and how tenses fit with meaning, it gives them a better understanding of how grammar works. Reading not only boosts your kid's grammar skills, but it also provides a pleasant and enjoyable activity that helps their writing skills, including better sentence and a richer vocabulary.

2. Blend songs into the teaching process.

Songs capture students' attention, making the learning process more appealing and interactive, helping them stay focused and interested in the lessons. The combination of rhythm, melody, and lyrics of songs also will build up their memory to recall grammatical rules, concept structures, and vocabulary easier. By singing along students also practice correct pronunciation, intonation, and stress pattern in an amusing, low-pressure environment. Additionally, singing will make students feel more comfortable and less self-conscious, promoting active participation and providing a positive learning atmosphere. It can be a powerful motivator, helping students feels more excited and enthusiastic about learning grammar.

3. Write for pleasure.

Write for pleasure means that young learners have the freedom to develop, explore, and express their creativity in the form of writing according to their interests. They are encouraged to write anything they like, from poems and rhymes to short stories or personal diary. After they pick a topic and write their piece, go through it with them to check their spelling and grammar. Ensuring that you clear up any misplaced grammar or punctuation, and give them a compliment about using it correctly. When children can write for fun, they feel accomplished and see their ideas come to life. This also cements their grammar knowledge.

Conclusion

There are many ways to turn the complexity of learning and understanding grammar into something fun and exciting. In fact, such learning methods are much more effective, especially for children - with less theories, more actions, and simple delivery. With these ideas or learning strategies, they not only develop and hone their grammar skills, but they also learn to be more creative in creating or making things, and appear more confident. Their critical thinking skills will also improve, as they are taught to analyze and re-evaluate what they have done.
