What is the history of Soeharto Hill?
Historically, the hill was visited several times by second president of Indonesian Republic, Soeharto. It is firstly happend at the opening of the XII National MTQ (Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran) in Aceh. His interest on this place was due to vast and quiet hills. Here, the second president made a great villa as a stopover when he visited Aceh whenever he wanted.
Unfortunately, the great villa that was beautifully built facing directly to the Indian Ocean is now only a memory. The building is now flattened to the ground because it was burned by unknown people in the conflict-ravaged Aceh period.
Now, all that remains is a Japanese heritage namely cannon. Initially, this cannon was at the Momong Beach, Lampuuk. However, it has been removed to this hill. Its length is approximately 7 meters with a very heavy weight.
On December 21, 1995, Indonesia's second President, Soeharto, inaugurated the National Greening and Nature Conservation Peak (PPKAN) in one of the hills named Lamreh, Masjid Raya sub-district. Since then, the hill has been known as the Soeharto Hill.
