Our recent study suggests that women with endometriosis who conceive spontaneously, that is, without the help of assisted reproductive technologies, seem to be at a higher risk of preeclampsia.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrial-like tissue) grows outside the uterine cavity, such as ovaries, bowel, and pelvis. The hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle affect the misplaced endometrial-like tissue, causing the area to become inflamed and painful. Some of the symptoms include painful periods, cramps 1-2 weeks around menstruation, heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding between periods, infertility, pain during sexual intercourse, discomfort with bowel movements, and lower back pain that may occur at any time during the menstrual cycle.
Preeclampsia is a serious condition that develops during pregnancy which is marked by high blood pressure (hypertension) and high levels of protein in the urine (proteinuria). High blood pressure can affect the blood supply to the placenta, and impair the liver, kidneys, and lungs. In fact, the protein in the urine is a sign of kidney dysfunction. Preeclampsia can cause preterm delivery (baby must be delivered early) and premature babies are at high risk for complications such as low birth weight and respiratory issues. Therefore, preeclampsia must be diagnosed and treated early by a healthcare provider.
