- First of all, let me introduce my self my name is eka indah Yuliani n I am to be your guide specially at here for tell u a story about battle of sultan agung and jan Peeterszoon coen painting
LITLE BIT BOUT PAINTING
- So ladies n gentlemen u can see at here that is the battle of sultan agung and jan Peeterszoon coen painting that made by mr s sudjojono that many have painted about war and heroism
- This painting tell us about 2 time of battle situation of sultan agung to Batavia castle on 1628 and 1629
- This painting have 3 meters wide and 10 meters long.
BEGINNING OF PAINTING
- Mr sudjojono made this painting because an order by mr ali sadikin that the governor of Jakarta on march 1973
- Mr sudjojono's wife,rose pandanwangi said that how really happy mr sudjojono get an order of this painting
- Until he be quite allday that illustrated bout mix of happy and panic
- He very happy bout the order because he will paint some figure that he really like is sultan agung,the third king of mataram kingdom
- But he panic because in the sametime he got invitation from friendship institution Indonesia nedherland for holding a solo exhibition at des indes hotel,haag,nedherland on 3rd until 10th may 1973.
- But he didn't waste the chance to go to nedherland and get some information to make this painting.
PREPARING PAINTING
- Mr sudjojono made this painting need 7 months from idea,prepare,anda making.
- After my sudjojono get the order , he take some research.
- He said we cant fabricate when painting history.
- Because his credo is first the truth after that beauty
- he research visual proof ,but he cant find it.
- After that he research literature proof and read all the books but thts not enough
- All the literature at Indonesia don't detauiling bout the object
- Like the face,war clothes,and another trinkets
- When he stay at nedherland for 3 month for setting his solo exhibiton, he visited some museum at Amsterdam,haag,and Groningen
- And he specially visited hoorn city was the citi of jp coen born for understand the character.
- When he research some information at the museum, he knows that not that much people know jp coen.
- Even he got some information by historian that there is jp coen little statue above the pillar of office building at hoorn.
- And he go there and gratefull he and his wife can go there for see, take a picture, and make a sketch of jp coan little statue.
- For the soldier uniform information he got from leigen university library specially prof theodore paul galestin
- And he got another information like the soldier from nedherland troops not only from nedherland but from japan and china too.
- Royal horseman mataram use short sleeves
- Their clothes streaked
- That every color is some amulet that they believe can be a shield.
- He even get information about head tie, pants shape, and mostly java soldier have black teeth
- Thts little useless thing make some problem for mr sudjojono
THINGS FOR PAINTING
- Beside research information, mr sutjojono search some painting equipments like oil paints and large brushes
- And canvas 3meters time 10 meters specially from belgia
- And he bring the canva with some help from his friend at united nations developments program
AT HOME
- He don't painting at the museum because he can follow the museum rule that just open until evening but he wanna painting anytime
- Because that he make a studio in front of his house
- But before painting , he made some sketch and give it to ali sadikin and he feel satisfied
BOUT BATLLE
- Mataram kingdom take a long way for expand power
- They don't just against their own country but they have to against nedherland that have coclonized Indonesia since 1596
- The battle didn't happen once but twice
- First war on 1628 but mataram kingdom lose because spy destroy their logistic that make mataram soldier hungry and the mataram kingdom weapon not as sophisticated as the nedherland
THE RIGHT PAINTING
- Look at the right side
- This explain about how the war start
- Sultan agung deligate kyai rangga for make peace with certain condition from mataram kingdom with bring 6 bunch of grain because sultan agung doesn't allow farmer sells the grain to nedherland
- But jp coen reject the negotiation
- Because that sultan agung angry and attack Batavia castle
- Mr sudjojono paint some message at these painting
- Jp coen as the western people and kyai rangga as the eastern people have the same height
- Thts mean western people and Asian people in the same level
THE LEFT PAINTING
- Look at the left side
- This is painting of sultan agung
- And u have to know something that in fact sultan agung and jp coen never get down to war
- Because that mr sudjojono paint them in the different canva
- At this canva sultan agung sit at his throne in the middle canva showing powerful
- arictocrats and servants look down gracefully showing more powerful of sultan agung
- this painting tell us about seban ceremony or work meeting for setting war strategy
- look at decorative motif of batik named parang barong
- batik parang barong showing majesty anda supernatural power and usually used for tradition ceremony because that batik is sacred
THE MIDDLE PAINTING
- and the biggest canva in the middle tell us about the war of sultan agung versus jp coen
- the second attack from mataram kingdom to Batavia castle happen on 1629 and succeed burn the castle
- the second attact, mataram kingdom arrive at sunda kelapa on 22 august 1628 with 25 ship transport 9000 people from java, madura,bali, southeast west nusa, and south Sulawesi
- mr sudjojono didn't just showing fight but showing unity and diversity too
- that's being pioneer unity of Indonesia even from different place and culture for grab independence of Indonesia
- the war happen on 24 august 1628
- you can see the black smoke at the castle that showing matarm kingdom burn Batavia castle and people said jp coen died because that although mataram kingdom cant win and cant get Batavia because limitation weapon and logistic
- as you can see the war just happen outside city wall and never penetrate Batavia castle
- u can see the horses eye is big even though Indonesian horses have little eyes
- that because horses from the turkey and showing good relationship between mataram kingdom and turkey
- and u can see even this is the terrible war but mr sudjoyono don't paint even a drop of blood
- that an unrealistic's choise of mr sudjoyono
- he don't wanna creat revenge and hatred
- he trust that discussion 100 times more good than kill once. There's no gain people kill another people though that happen in ardinary fight or war
- and another detail of this painting u can see the headband of bali peole or another traditional clothes from different people.
