Fragments of Identity: The Biography of Octavia Dingss
Born in Bengkalis Island, Riau, Indonesia in 1992, Octavia Dingss first started taking photographs in her early teens. She started to take photos of herself when she was 13 years old. She discovered her love for the arts at a very young age. Octavia's diverse background greatly influences her identity.
Her ancestry consists of Ancient Fujian, Sino-Tibetan, and European roots, resulting in a one-of-a-kind cultural mix.Octavia shared a strong connection with her Eurasian grandmother. Although her grandmother never fully disclosed their European heritage, the impact she had on Octavia is remarkable.
Octavia Dingss began her journey in self-portraiture at the age of 13, in 2005. Utilizing a tripod and timer, she frequently captures her images both in her studio and amidst natural settings. Over the course of her artistic development, Dingss has explored a variety of camera formats, including analog, Polaroid, and digital cameras that were accessible at the time. This experimentation has contributed to the evolution of her unique style, which is marked by a sense of rawness and authenticity from an early age. She is usually half hidden by objects, shadow or appears as a blur. Her self portraits shows her emotions, identity, dreams and visions. Dingss capture the complex strength and vulnerability of her identity in her self-portraits.
