In May 25-26, 2016 Indonesia will be hosting the most determining event in energy sector, The World Clean Coal Conference. This huge event will bring together many key stakeholders that play important role in Indonesian and global energy development, such as government institutions, authorities of energy planning and regulators, coal miner, oil & gas corporates, investors, financials, scientist & technologist, environmental services and many more.

In partnership with Indonesian Coal Mining Association and World Coal Association, this event through a series of targeted session will be projected to look closely the Indonesian regional clean coal sectors. Topics will include : coal upgrading, coal gasification, coal-to-liquid (CTL), syngas treatment, underground coal gasification (UCG), gas to power, project economic evaluation, coal infrastructure, and environmental issues (worldcleancoal.org, 2015)

BP statistical review 2015 revealed that Indonesia’s coal production reached 458 million tonnes in 2014 and eventhough it is still the smallest increase since 2000 but this is still the fifth largest increase in the world. Indonesia was the world’s largest exporter of thermal coal, with nearly 80% of production leaving the country.

On contrary, the development of renewable energy resources in Indonesia only reached of 5% based on The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia in 2013 eventhough Indonesia has agreed to increase the use of total renewable energy resources to 19% (including hydropower) by 2019 and to a minimum of 23% by 2025.

The new report of Winarno Zain in The Jakarta Post, declared that one of the factors behind the slowdown of Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) over the last several quarters was the declining contributions from export growth, especially the most dramatic driver is the declining magnitude of coal export to China that has invested more in its non-fossil-fuel-resources.

All negotiators in the world are now working hard to make sure that all global leaders reaching the same goal to saving the future climate fate in Conference of The Parties (COP) 21, by pressing the growth of non-fossil-fuel resources and increasing the speed of renewable energy resources growth.

World Clean Coal Conference can be seen as the COP of Indonesia due to its determining moment of the future of energy sector in Indonesia and world.

As we see that we expect an energy revolution resulted from this conference. We expect to see this conference as a milestone for Indonesia to reach 19% renewable energy resources by 2019 and to a minimum of 23% by 2025. We expect to see this conference not merely becoming a celebration or worse as a catalyst to drive the growth of coal production as non-renewabler energy resources instead of becoming the driver of renewable energy production.

Indonesia has no reason to deny or ignore the development of renewable energy resource to occur in this country. Indonesia only needs being serious to boost this issue by starting positioning “this talk” as the main topic in this conference.
