Shadow Puppetry originated in the archipelago, especially Indonesia, and has been around for centuries. In the Javanese palace environment, the art of shadow puppetry is very close to the world of politics and power. This shadow puppet show has existed since the Soekarno administration where shadow puppets became a means of political delivery, ranging from strengthening legitimacy, political events to campaigns. 

Initially, shadow puppetry performances were influenced by animist beliefs and Hindu-Buddhist religions. However, after the entry of Islam into the region, this performing art underwent a transformation so that it was adopted and implemented into Islamic culture.

Along with the introduction of Islam, stories in shadow puppetry performances began to be taken from Islamic scriptures such as the Quran and hadith, as well as stories of saints and famous Islamic figures. 

In the predominantly Muslim Javanese society, shadow puppetry became an effective medium to convey moral messages, ethics and religious teachings in an interesting and easy-to-understand way. shadow puppetry has become a unique cultural and political and cultural delivery tool.

This art is not just entertainment, but also has an important role in people's lives, especially in the context of political and cultural education. Puppeteers (performance leader) often slips moral messages complemented by political issues and Islamic teachings in shadow puppetry performances.

Shadow puppetry is a traditional art that is rich in political and cultural values in Muslim societies. As one of the most famous forms of traditional theater or performing arts in Indonesia, shadow puppetry as great potential as an effective educational tool in delivering political and cultural messages to the Muslim community.

Basically, shadow puppetry is not just an entertainment show, but also contains deep philosophical meanings. The characters in shadow puppet shows often represent Islamic values of virtue and justice, such as courage, loyalty and justice. As such, shadow puppets are a powerful tool in spreading the teachings of Islam and cultural values that are deeply rooted in moral teachings in Indonesia.

Shadow puppetry is often utilized as an effective political education tool in Muslim societies. Through the stories presented in shadow puppet shows, people are introduced to political concepts, such as leadership, justice and wisdom in government. In the context of political education, shadow puppets can be used to teach the concepts of democracy, leadership and citizens' rights. For example, the characters in shadow puppets often represent characters and traits that exist in the political world, so that audiences can take lessons about political dynamics and the importance of integrity in leadership.

In addition, shadow puppetry also functions as a social reflection, depicting the realities and issues that are happening in society. Puppet shows are often a means to convey social criticism indirectly. Puppeteers use shadow puppetry stories to convey ideas or aspirations on the social, economic and political conditions that occur in society. In this way, shadow puppets become a medium or tool for people to see political reality and find solutions to existing political issues.

In shadow puppet show, there are various characters that often symbolize or represent Indonesian political figures. In shadow puppet stories, such as the Pandavas in the Mahabharata, or Ramayana, are often portrayed as inspiring political figures. The Pandavas, known for their noble traits such as honesty, justice and courage, are often correlated with the ideal leaders expected in the political system. Meanwhile, the Kuravas, with negative traits such as greed and injustice, portray examples of corrupt and immoral leadership.
