Recently I read a book titled "Be The Hand and Feet" written by Nick Vujicic, founder of an organization "Life Without Limbs", motivator, speaker, and above all, God use him to spread His love to all people in the world. Nick has a simple mission. He just want to tell about Jesus to as many people he could reach. He wants at least every people in the world ever heard His name.
In one chapter in his books titled "The Sweet Fruit", he writes a story about his friend, another unfortunate people just like him, a people that even a person that born without hands and feets feel pity for. His name is Xayvier Swenson. Xayvier never knew who is his father. When he was born, he took by the government because his mother is a junkie, so she is considered unable to take care of him. While his mother went to rehabilitation center, Xayvier went to an orphanage, and he kept on moving from one orphanage to another orphanage. When he was still a child, he kept getting tortured, and the scar can be seen in his body until now.
In his life, he only met his mother twice. The last one is the moment when his mother died because of overdose. One day, his mom call him because she has nowhere to go. So Xayvier look for an apartment for her, and he went out for groceries. When he came back, he found out that his mother use the drugs again, and overdose in front of him. When the emergency response unit came, she was dead.
Xayvier, since he lived from one orphanage to another, and practically didnt have home to live, he also spent many of his time in the street. And one of his job is selling drugs. But he realize that if he kept doing that, he will be ended in jail. So he try to improve his life by going to the Army. He made it, and even sent to Iraq. But the normal life that he dreamt didnt last long either.
The peak of his pitiful day came when he was in a parachute training. Xayvier stumbled by his friend and his head hit the body of the plane. He ended fell from the height with his parachute still close. Miraculously, his parachute opened before he hit the ground. But still, since he is unconscious, he got severe injury. That accident broke his ribs, pelvis, and injured his head. He continues his life with dependency to pain killer drugs. He still fight to recover, and after some surgery, he ended by using wheelchair for his mobility.
He felt very devastated. He tried to end his life by cut his pulse, but a police officer, which turn out a christian save him. The police officer said, "I could see Holy Spirit in you". And even tough he almost not make it, once again, he lives. Now, he dedicated his life for children that has the same condition with him and led them to God. Back in his days, he has been through a lot horrible things, especially in his orphanage days. But, he said, there is one orphanage that make him fell safe. Its an orphanage managed by a church. And he also got baptized there. "Since that day, God protect my emotion and my life situation kept stable and also save me when i supposed not make it," Xayvier said.
Xayvier describe his faith as "something that planted inside of him, like an engine that makes him feel spirited and full of energy when he is surrounded by a lot of spiritual people." Xayvier told that sometimes he feel mad to God, and wants to end his life. But somehow he kept growing and by faith alone, he can make it. Maybe, not many of us experienced what Xayvier has been through. He grew without parents. And I assume by his story that he doesnt have any relative, thats why he ended in an orphanage. But without he realized, God keep walking with him, and protect him. He still alive after several threathening life situation happen to him.
He has 100 reason to suicide, according to him, but according to God he has 1000 reason to live. In God, he has found his purpose in life.
