ABSTRAK
Tulisan ini dibuat untuk melihat bagaimana pembentukan sebuah identitas komunitas dapat terbentuk. Fenomena ini terjadi pada pengguna vespa klasik dengan pelat nomor berwarna dasar hitam berbentuk persegi. Penelitian ini dibuat bertujuan untuk mengetahui pelat nomor hitam pada vespa klasik sebagai tanda visual (Simbol) dalam kontribusi terhadap pembentukan identitas komunitas. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan wawancara dan kuesioner sebagai teknik utama pengumpulan data berdasarkan teori dan pendekatan paradigma sosiologi. Guna mempermudah penelitian, digunakan metode analisis pengantar semiotika sehingga simbol yang direpresentasikan pada objek penelitian dapat diketahui sebagai tanda visual. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya makna khusus terhadap bentuk pelat nomor komunitas vespa klasik yang dilandasi atas kemiripan nilai dan perspektif antar anggota, kemudian membentuk suatu kesepakatan atas simbol identitas komunitas dan gaya hidup yang mereka pegang. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa tindakan kolektivitas komunitas vespa klasik dalam melestarikan identitas sejarah melalui media pelat nomor kostum sebagai simbol identitas komunitasnya. Penelitian ini diharap dapat memberikan sumbangsih dalam keilmuan DKV berupa cara pandang desain komunikasi visual terhadap peristiwa sosial, dalam konteks ini adalah fenomena unik pada pelat hitam di kendaraan vespa. Serta cara pandang pelat nomor sebagai bagian dari sosial-masyarakat yang layak untuk dikaji serta didalami, tidak terbatas dalam kajian sosiologi tapi juga desain komunikasi visual.

A SOCIOLOGICAL DESIGN STUDY OF BLACK NUMBER PLATES ON CLASSIC VESPA AS A SYMBOL OF COMMUNITY IDENTITY
ABSTRACT
This paper was created to examine how the formation of a community identity can take shape. This phenomenon occurs among classic Vespa users with square-shaped black license plates. The purpose of this research is to understand the black license plates on classic Vespas as visual signs (symbols) contributing to the formation of community identity. The research employs a qualitative method, with interviews and questionnaires as the main data collection techniques, based on sociological theories and approaches. To facilitate the research, an introductory semiotics analysis method was used, enabling the symbols represented in the object of study to be understood as visual signs. The findings show that the shape of the license plates in the classic Vespa community holds a special meaning, grounded in shared values and perspectives among members, which in turn creates a consensus on the symbol of community identity and the lifestyle they embrace. These findings indicate that the collective actions of the classic Vespa community in preserving historical identity through customized license plates serve as a symbol of their community identity. This research is expected to contribute to the field of Visual Communication Design , offering a perspective on visual communication design regarding social phenomena, in this context, the unique phenomenon of black plates on Vespa vehicles. It also presents a perspective on license plates as a part of the socio-cultural realm that deserves to be studied and explored, not only within sociological studies but also in visual communication design.
