India's government, in collaboration with the United Nations, has contributed $150 million to pave the way for a brighter future for South-South Cooperation. This initiative has supported 84 projects across 64 developing countries, addressing challenges such as agricultural resilience and green energy. (15/12)
"In this challanging global context, South-South and triangular cooperation is opening new horizons for us to catalyse the progress," said by Dima al-Khatib Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC).
Many accomplishments due to South-South cooperation have been coming to the surface and having a significant impact on developing countries. In the Pacific region, for instance, 11 small island developing states have implemented solar energy systems in government buildings, marking a step closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. This transition will soon eliminate their dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, in Burkina Faso, a country well-known for being landlocked, a new dam has been constructed to provide agricultural resilience in response to unpredictable rainfall worsened by climate change.
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed stated that despite numerous controversies highlighting South-North relations, South-South cooperation does not aim to eradicate these challenges. Instead, it provides added value, as developing countries have their own platforms to engage in comparative economic analyses and foster complementary synergies, rather than being handcuffed by the Global North.
"South-South cooperation should not be seen as a substitute for North-South cooperation but as complementary, and we invite all countries and organizations to engage in supporting triangular cooperation initiatives," she said
